Christ Church Cathedral

Activity 1: St Joseph’s Cathedral

Christ Church Cathedral was built between 1864 and 1904 in the center of the city, surrounded by Cathedral Square but was demolished bye an earthquake in March 2012 .

  1. Hi there Ebony,

Hope you’re having a good holiday. My name is Jade F and I am one of the blog commenters on the Summer Learning Journey team.

I thought your post on the Christchurch Cathedral was fantastic. It’s great that you chose a Cathedral here in New Zealand, especially one that is not standing anymore but is still seen as a national monument in our country! That’s amazing that it took over 40 years to build! Have you been to Christchurch before? I went to visit family down in Christchurch but I didn’t get to see the Cathedral when it was still standing unfortunately, but the new cathedral that’s been built there (which is made of cardboard) is said to be very beautiful.

Looking forward to reading to more of your blog posts and keep up the amazing work!

    Cheers,
    Jade F :)

  2. Kia Ora Ebony,

What a fabulous blog post about St Joseph's Cathedral. I really learning more about when it was built. It's very sad that it was damaged so severely by the earthquake in 2012. Do you remember when the earthquake happened? It was such a horrific event in our country's history.

Thanks for including so many pictures of the Cathedral you chose. When I was in year 10, my social studies class went on a trip to Christchurch as we were studying earthquakes. I visited this Cathedral and unfortunately it was not in one piece. It's a lot bigger then the photos make it look too!

Ka pai, I look forward to reading more of your blog posts soon! Don't forget you can also comment on other students work to gain extra points. The programme runs until the 26th Jan (next Friday).
